Waymo, Alphabet’s autonomous driving subsidiary, is accelerating its efforts to scale up its robotaxi services across the United States. The company has announced the construction of a new manufacturing facility in Mesa, Arizona, in partnership with Magna International, to retrofit electric vehicles with its self-driving technology. This strategic move aims to double Waymo’s current fleet by 2026, enhancing its presence in existing markets and facilitating expansion into new cities.

Mesa Factory Overview

Currently, Waymo operates a fleet of approximately 1,500 autonomous vehicles, primarily in cities like Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin. With the new Mesa facility, the company plans to add 2,000 more robotaxis by 2026, effectively more than doubling its fleet size. This expansion will support Waymo’s services in existing markets and facilitate entry into new metropolitan areas, including Atlanta, Miami, and Washington, D.C.
